The symbiosis between fauna and vineyard: Volaina, Ratpenat and Mirabelles

Volaina (Parellada), Ratpenat (Macabeu) and Mirabelles (Malvasia de Sitges) are part of Univers Vida, a Celler Credo project born from the conviction that the vineyard is much more than a crop: it is a living ecosystem that we must understand, protect and preserve. Through these wines, we give voice to species that are essential to the natural balance of the Penedès and help raise awareness of their ecological importance. Volaina highlights the role of butterflies as bioindicators of landscape quality; Ratpenat champions the role of bats in the natural control of insects and pests; and Mirabelles emphasises the indispensable work of bees as pollinating agents and guardians of biodiversity. In collaboration with the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Granollers and local beekeepers, these wines help promote research, conservation and environmental outreach projects. Each bottle is an invitation to rediscover historic varieties of the Penedès and, at the same time, to become aware of the biological richness that makes life possible in our vineyards. Because caring for butterflies, bats and bees also means caring for the landscape that gives rise to our wines.

What is the ageing potential of varieties such as Parellada or Malvasia?

Although they are often associated with wines intended for young consumption, the way we work the vineyard and the professionalism applied in the winery give these white wines a surprising structure. Malvasia de Sitges (Mirabelles), in particular, has a natural acidity that allows it to evolve beautifully in bottle, gaining honeyed nuances and complexity over time, provided it is stored at home in a cool, dark place without sudden changes in temperature.
