Enigmatic and unknown, yet absolutely essential for a balanced ecosystem, the bat is the only flying mammal on the planet. Its remarkable biological features include its long lifespan (bats can live for over 40 years) and its ability to consume 600 to 1,200 insects an hour.

Ratpenat grows out of a shared commitment on the part of Celler Credo and the Granollers Natural Science Museum to defend the environment and the living creatures that inhabit it.
The agreement between the partners, signed in 2013, aims to investigate the importance of this mammal in the ecosystem as an efficient insectivore and raise awareness of the key role bats play through the wines we make at Celler Credo.
Ratpenat is made using grapes from a single vineyard where the soil contains glossy slate (phyllites) and quartz riverbed sediments – an exceptional soil type in the Penedès region. The vineyard is hand-harvested
Alliances for sustainability
Celler Credo, in collaboration with the Granollers Natural Science Museum and the Ebro Delta Natural Park, have designed a crate with a dual function: first as a wine case and second as a bat roost.
For the first time, this project makes it possible to reuse wine cases by transforming them into homes for bats.
Thanks to their ability to consume 600 to 1,200 insects an hour during periods of peak activity, bats are considered excellent natural predators. When integrated into the vineyard ecosystem, they become great allies for controlling insect pests. They play a particularly important role in combating the European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana), an insect that lays its eggs in the skin of the fruit and bores holes in the grapes to feed. Bats, nocturnal fliers like the moth, can be an effective natural means of controlling the population of this pest.
